Process

IN A NUTSHELL

This project resonates a serene experience of how tessellation can create beautiful patterns. How a single image with minor manipulation can result in patterns that are this eye catching.

Ine can watch this all day and feel at peace and equilibrium. Inspired by one of favorite toys as a kid, as the name suggests Kaleidoscope, this project aims at recreating a similar experience without the attachment of a physical object to look into.

THE ECOSYSTEM

After understanding child abuse in detail and evaluating the situation in the world and in our country we did stakeholder mapping to map out the different players in this system.

First , all the players in the ecosystem were mapped out to understand who all are contributing in the system. Each of these stakeholders were then further broken down to understand who all fall under each of these vast categories. This stakeholder mapping was done basically to be able to eliminate some stakeholders who are not playing a very big role or who are not impacting the system in a big way or those people who do not interact with the ecosystem on a first hand basis.

This helped us slowly narrow down our project scope and start looking at details and specifics of particular people. All these stakeholders were put in the order of interaction with the child. They were split into three categories to understand who is impacting the child the most.

People with direct interaction ( Primary Stakeholders) : Medical Care, Public Space, Home People with indirect interaction (Secondary Interaction ) : NGOs and Police Authorities. No interaction (Tertiary Interaction ) : Government, Media and Politicians

All the tertiary stakeholders don’t play such an important role in affecting the child directly.

stakeholder interaction mapping

The primary and secondary stakeholders were taken into consideration and their interaction between each other and with the victim/child was mapped out. This was to understand where the interaction is the most significant and affecting the system the most.

For the same interaction a value exchange map was drawn to understand what each of the stakeholders acquire from each other.

value exchange map

After understanding the various people in the system, and the kind of interaction that they have, we mapped out the kind of values that each of the stakeholders will be giving to the other. This basically means that we mapped out the interdependencies within the system. What is one getting from another.

The intent on doing this was to understand why each of these players are important in the ecosystem. How are these people helping each other and what is the symbiotic relationship each of them share with one another.

ecosystem mapping

The stakeholders mapping, the interaction mapping, the case study analysis and the value exchange mapping helped us understand individual aspects of the larger picture. The ecosystem, map was drawn out to understand how all of this fit together to form a closed knit system.

We followed the AEIOU format –

A: Activity- What

E: Environment – Where

I: Interaction – Who

O: Objects of interaction – How

U: Use

BUSINESS GOALS

USER RESEARCH

Secondary Research

We did intensive Secondary research to understand our system and all the people who are involved. This helped to better equip ourselves with the contribution of each of the stakeholders in the entire system. We made multiple mind maps to understand why. when, how and where this problem is occurring.

We studied in detail about child abuse.

Primary Research

Based on all the information acquired in the secondary research we put down a set of hypothesis and categorized all the people from our final stakeholder list into four categories for primary research :

  1. Experts : Who are the people who have a lot of experience in this domain?
  2. Lead Users : Who will our primary user for the solution be?
  3. Fans : Who are the people who are going to get happy about the implementation of the solution.
  4. Skeptics : Who are the people who are going to dislike the implementation of a solution.

what happened on the field

This project was based out of Nashik in Maharashtra. We divided the entire city into three major zones,. Upper Class, Middle Class and Lower Class. We visited places from all three sections to ensure we get a holistic approach to our research. We went to Railway Stations, NGOs which target protecting children. We interviewed parents, children, traffic police, railway police and ChildLine. We divided our field research in three stages –

  1. Stage 01 : First round of interviews with the authorities and NGOs. Many of our hypothesis were validated while some were discarded. Apart from these we got new insights. We iterated our hypothesis.

  2. Stage 02 : We went back to some similar people and some new people to validate our iterated hypothesis. Again some hypothesis got validate, some discarded and some new insights. New set of hypothesis was drafted in which there were a lot of outdoor scenarios.

  3. Stage 03 : We did a fly on the wall techniques to outdoor spaces like railway stations, bus stops, markets, parks, temples and some road intersections. We were at this stage able to narrow down our hypothesis to a large extent. We arrived at a lot of problem areas which we could identify.

  4. Stage 04 : This was the most important part where we interacted with parents and children. We made two fun activity for the parents which subconsciously told us what their views were with respect to children safety and how they tackled this problem. We made a game for the children to understand how much about child safety, DOs and DONTs while going out they knew. We got very surprising results from the game with the children.

After these four stages we had collected ample amount of data that had to be analyzed to make sense of the data.

Persona

The target audience became very narrow catering primarily the childline India Foundation and the various partners across all districts.

USER INSIGHTS

Opportunity Areas

  1. Data Representation tool based on data of all children who have been reported to CHildline across the country
  2. Trend analysis for the data to arrive at insights which can be used for planning purposes.
  3. Redesign the entire system, to ensure better communication and structure in the system.

After pitching it to the stakeholders our mentors posted a requirement for a data representation tool for the Childline which will really help in generating trend analysis and real time insight generation.

Product Statement

The problem of lack of appropriate data representation is impacting our users resulting in difficulty to get a detail view of the situation of child abuse in our country. The solution would enable the users to dynamically see the scenario of the entire country without having to go through tiresome excel sheets.

Target Audience

The target audience became very narrow catering primarily the childline India Foundation and the various partners across all districts.

User Needs

After getting our personas down, we build user stories and scenarios which eventually lead us to come up with the user needs for the different persona.

  1. Visual representation of the vulnerabilities according to call data.
  2. Visual representation of vulnerabilities based on comparative call data and the vulnerability status updated by the regional center heads.
  3. Intensity of every vulnerability at three levels – Pan India, State and District.
  4. Vulnerability at three levels- Pan India, State and District.

IDEATION & WIREFRAMES

Ideation

Brainstorming

Using the 6 thinking hats arrived at a few probable solutions that could be worked upon. We conducted a survey of proposing the ideas to different stakeholders asking them to rate it. They gave us various inputs of why the various solutions might work and might not work. This gave us a third person point of view of our solution. The probable solutions have been roughly drafted. The final solution was derived out of these probable solutions.

Conceptual Model

On surveying with various people we arrived at a solution that first can be used as a data representation tool, and has the scope of expansion towards a planning tool as well as resource allocation tool. On discussing with stakeholders, we parked the idea of expansion for now and focused more on data representation and insight generation and the trend analysis.

Our stakeholders gave us some really insightful feedback which helped us redefine or solution and make it more efficient.
